Good evening all-

I hope you were able to enjoy some of the past four days and if you were in the areas that lost power and had significant damage that things are getting back to normal.  I can't believe we are looking at another potential significant storm!

It's a very busy week at AHS:
Monday, 3/12: Class meetings D & E periods
                        Scholarship committee - 2:50pm
                        Spring sports meeting - 7:00pm
Tuesday, 3/13: French classes host Crepe Day - 3:00pm
                        Make-A-Wish Clocker Feud - 7:00pm
Thursday, 3/15: Mini-college Fairs - 9:45am
                          Band Concert - 7:00pm
Friday, 3/16: NHS Talent Show - 7:00pm

I will be out of the building Friday morning at the regional Principal's meeting.

As you know, there is a group of student leaders organizing the student walk-out planned for the Wednesday, March 14, which is the one month anniversary of the shooting at Stoneman Douglass High School.  The students have identified a plan and are creating an event that is respectful of all while getting their message across.  I had hoped to spend some time discussing our roles and responsibilities as the adults in the building at Thursday's faculty meeting but as you know the snow had other plans for us.  I do intend to move forward with the class meetings tomorrow to allow the students to briefly share their plans with the student bodyClass meetings will be held D (9th 7 10th) & E (11th & 12th) periods.  As I have said Student safety and supervision is the priority.  I hope to work collaboratively to provide coverage for students who walk as well as those who stay in the classroom.  We will be looking at Campus Aide and study hall coverage for that time as well as coverage for those teachers who have asked to help by walking with the students. Please do everything you can to show your support for all students and to discourage conversations that make any students feel there is something wrong with their choice.

On March 26 Ashland Public Schools, along with many other community organizations, is pleased to welcome John Trautwein, founder of the "Will to Live Foundation" as part of the ongoing POWER series.
John will speak to Ashland Middle & High School students during the day as well as coaches, teachers, and other adults who work with students through athletics after school.  I encourage you to join us at the community presentation that evening and hear his powerful message.  Following this event we will begin the process of implementing the SOS (Signs of Suicide) program to the 10th grade.  This is the evidence-based program we began at AHS last school year.
He will present at AHS during 3rd & 5th blocks:
F block: grades 11-12
A block: grades 9-10
He will present to coaches at 3:30pm and the community at 7pm in the AHS auditorium.

OUR MISSION OF HOPE, LOVE & THE WILL TO LIVE:
“We are dedicated to preventing teen suicide by improving the lives and the‘Will To Live’ of teenagers everywhere through education about mental health and encouraging them to recognize the love and hope that exists in each other.”
You may have seen this in the Globe a few weeks ago:

3. Former Red Sox reliever John Trautwein has devoted his life to the “Will to Live Foundation” that he founded after his son Will, then 15 years old and a freshman at Northview High School in Johns Creek, Ga., committed suicide in 2010. Trautwein is a compelling speaker who began the foundation in his mind and made it a reality when giving his son’s eulogy. Trautwein decided then and there he was going to help kids from taking the same tragic path as Will, who was by all accounts a well-adjusted kid who was great at sports and music and had numerous friends. Trautwein will be speaking at Ashland High School and Ashland Middle School on March 26.

The Courageous Conversation: Can It Happen Here? event has been rescheduled to Monday, April 2 from 7-9pm in the AHS cafeteria. This is a student run initiative to discuss school safety at AHS.  We will have a panel followed by round table discussion on how we all play a role in prevention.  I hope you can join us!

Red Cross Blood Drive in Support of Jake on April 4th, 2 - 7 pm at AHS
Just a reminder about this event!  Ashland High School is honored to be a part of the team supporting Jake by hosting a blood drive.  Please consider donating or offering your help in other ways if you are unable to do so.  Because of the time frame of this drive I will support students who sign up between 2-2:45pm.  This is a community event and I want to support students who may want to donate but can't do it after the school day is over.  Thanks for understanding.
-Student sign-up's will happen at lunch, starting later this week. (Note: you must be 17 years old to donate or 16 years old with written parental consent.)
-Adults can sign-up at https://www.redcrossblood.org/ Enter Sponsor Code: AshlandHS
(likewise, if you wish to donate but can't stay after school, please let us know and we will work to accommodate.)

I found this blog post from George Couros interesting.  Assessment as learning is certainly a conversation worth having within departments.  He is the keynote speaker this year at
Medfield's Digital Learning Day  Let me know if you are interested in attending!

Have a wonderful week and we will keep our fingers crossed that the predictions are wrong and we will have a full school week!

Good afternoon- Thanks to everyone who helped to make New Student Orientation a success last night. It was great to see so many students and staff in the building. I am looking forward to seeing you all on Monday. We start at 8AM in the auditorium. There will be some members of the Class of 2026 painting their parking spots on Monday afternoon. Please try to park in the faculty parking lot or in the back of the building if you usually park in the student section.  New staff, please join the staff  Google Classroom . All information sent to faculty/staff will be housed here. The  class code is a5ca6a4. The custodians have been working hard to make sure each classroom has the correct number of desks (minus study halls). There may be a few classrooms off a desk or two based on student moves at the end of this week. If anyone has furniture in their rooms that is not being used, please let me know. We are short some L-shaped desks, under-desk file cabinets, and bookcases....

Good morning- I hope the adjustment to the clocks springing forward hasn't thrown you off too much. I love that it means more light in the afternoon/evening.  On Thursday, March 13 year 2/3 teachers from Milford and Nipmuc High Schools will be here for learning walks. I have shared a schedule with impacted teachers but it may change over the next few days. Thank you for your flexibility and willingness to welcome new educators.  I am sure you saw Jim's message that the School Committee will hear our proposal on Competency Determination for the Class of 2025 at their meeting on Wednesday, March 12. I hope to share an update at our faculty meeting on Thursday, March 13, after school in the library . The meeting will involve MCAS training. As you are aware, the state has moved to a new portal so it will be important information for everyone to hear. Training for staff that do not attend faculty meetings will be scheduled at another time. Following the training, we will be walking...
